“Behold, children are a heritage from Yahweh, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Ps 127:3). God’s Word regards children as a great blessing. To Abraham and to all believers he gives this promise: “And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you” (Gen 17:7). To the Old Testament church he said, “I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.” Peter said, “For the promise is to you and to your children.” (Acts 2:39). The signs to be administered to believers and their children. Under the types and shadows he gave circumcision as a pointer to the death of Christ (Col 2:11–12) and in the New Covenant he gave baptism (Col 2:11–12; Matt 28:19; Rom 6:4).
The instruction of our children is a duty and a benefit of the covenant of grace. The principal things that parents can do for their children are these: 1) See that they are baptized and catechized (instructed) in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in a true church, i.e., a congregation where the pure gospel is preached, the sacraments are purely administered, and where church discipline is practiced for the correction and restoration of the body; 2) Pray for that your children are granted the benefits of the covenant of grace; 3) See to it that they attend with you to the due use of the ordinary means of grace; 4) Pray that the Lord provides them with a godly spouse; 5) See to their secular education preferably via some version of a classical model (but not under the influence of the Wilsonites); 6) Love them as a gift from the Lord, as the Lord loved you and gave himself for you.
