Our Lord Jesus called the church to make disciples (Matt 28:18–20) and he even ordained means by which we might become disciples and grow in our discipleship. The Apostles followed this pattern (Acts 2:42; Rom 10:14). Nevertheless, when we think about discipleship we might think about small groups and para-church movements rather than about corporate worship in the visible church. The Rev Dr Jon Payne was on campus earlier this school year to talk with our faculty and students about this very thing, about the means of grace and discipleship in the context of the church. In the course of our discussion, we also discussed the response to the Revoice theology in the PCA. Of course, when we talked we were expecting the PCA General Assembly to meet as scheduled. Dr Payne is senior pastor of Christ Church Presbyterian (PCA) in Charleston, SC Before that, he was a PCA pastor near Atlanta. He is a trustee of the Banner of Truth Trust and studied at New College, Edinburgh. He is Executive Coordinator of the Gospel Reformation Network and editor of and contributor to the Lectio Continua Expository Commentary series and the author of several books including John Owen on the Lord’s Supper and Rediscovering the Beauty of Reformed Worship for the 21st Century. Jon and his wife Marla live in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, they have 2 children.
