The 1619 Project, a product of the New York Times, now a television series on Hulu, is a deeply flawed re-telling of American history. It is not simply that one disagrees with the conclusions of the 1619 Project—historians often disagree about conclusions—what is also at stake here is the question of which methods count as history and the 1619 Project has built its foundation on methodological sand. This is not the judgment of an isolated scholar here or there. The quantity and quality of criticism of the methods and factuality of the 1619 Project is unprecedented.
