A recent online critique of “law and gospel preaching” prompted this conversation between Pastor Chris Gordon and Dr. R. Scott Clark. Rather than dismissing the criticism, they take it seriously: yes, a preacher can force a grid onto a text, flatten every moral imperative, and end a sermon with a cheap “Jesus did it all for you.” But the abuse of the distinction does not nullify it. As Dr. Clark puts it, the law says do this and live; the gospel says Christ has done. These are two different kinds of speech, and both run from Genesis to Revelation — Jesus himself preached law and he preached gospel.
