Office Hours Season 8: Reformation 500—Definitions

Office Hours 2016 full sizeThis is season 8 of Office Hours and we are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. This is part 2 of a three-part introduction to the Reformation. In part 1 we looked briefly at the background to the Reformation in the medieval church, how the medieval church set the stage for the Reformation by pushing Holy Scripture to the margins in favor of church authority, how the mainstream medieval doctrines of justification and salvation obscured the biblical and ancient Christian gospel of a salvation freely given to sinners and received through faith alone, and how these changes, intended to foster sanctity actually ended up producing just the opposite: gross immorality and corruption so great that even the most hardened critics of the church were shocked. If you worship and serve in Reformed and evangelical circles, you are likely to hear much this year about the Reformation. For some of us, however, the Reformation is like many of great historical events. The name is familiar but the particulars are a little vague. What was it? In this episode we take a look at what the Reformation was and how we should understand it.
