I was driving home from work yesterday when I saw a teenager walking down the street in 80-degree weather with a hoodie pulled over his head. It’s July! I wish I owned the patent on the hoodie design, if such a thing exists. Today, regardless of the season, the one clothing item you’ll always see boys and men wearing is the hoodie. It has become the all-purpose, all-season expression of conformist, homogeneous masculinity. The hoodie is also a symbol of resignation. It’s the uniform of boys and young men in hiding. It’s a signal that reads, “Do Not Disturb!”

Great article.
“Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” – Sigmund Freud.
While this author may be correct in his analysis of “hoodie wearing” by many young men as a sign of emotional disfunction, there are other reasons why this garment is widely used. For one thing, immigrant workers from Central and South America who have outdoor jobs such as landscapers and tradesmen will often be seen wearing hoodies even in the hottest weather. A fellow I know used be in charge of the construction of restaurants internationally once told me that they do this for protection against the sun and that it’s only in North America where people walk around bare skinned. Then there are those, such as ANTIFA protestors and rioters, who wear hoodies and masks to cover their identities while carrying out acts of violence. Then still others, such as gang members, often wear hoodies of various colors that associate them with their various “social” groups. Finally, due to the wide spread prevalence of this article of clothing, it has just become a style among many groups of people. Things aren’t always as obvious as the might seem at first glance.
