In the well-researched and written volume, Calvin Meets Voltaire: The Clergy of Geneva during the Age of Enlightenment, 1685-1798, Eighteenth-Century Studies Series (Ashgate: 2014), Jennifer Powell McNutt argued that there was more continuity, than has sometimes been thought, between 18th-century Genevan theology, piety, and practice and that of Calvin’s Geneva in the 16th century. She leans particularly upon the sermons preached by the ministers in Geneva to make her case that, in the 18th century, as the Genevan church faced modernity, they adapted their teaching to meet the challenge without compromising the essentials. We had the pleasure of talking with Dr McNutt recently on Office Hours about her thesis and it seemed worth following up that discussion with our own Dr Ryan Glomsrud, Associate Professor of Historical Theology at Westminster Seminary California. Ryan teaches courses on modern theology. He earned his DPhil at Oxford on Karl Barth. He’s done postdoctoral research at Harvard University and he’s an ordained elder at Christ United Reformed Church (URCNA) in Santee, CA. This is part 1 of a two-part episode.
