Good News (Not): Indulgences Are Back (Again)

Darryl Hart posted this today:

Pope Francis will grant a plenary indulgence – a remission of all temporal punishment due to sin – to World Youth Day Catholic participants, the Vatican announced July 9.

Great lots of folk assume that, after Luther humiliated Rome over the sale of indulgences—remember Tetzel’s jingle, “When the coin in the coffer clinks, the soul from purgatory springs”?—Rome must have abandoned the sale of purgatory. They haven’t. As has been chronicled over the years on the HB (here, here, here, here, and here is what Calvin said).

Some things have changed but some things haven’t. The fundamental controversies remain.
