One challenging aspect in parenting is how to get important matters of faith in front of our kids. In our house, we pray together, we talk about church, and we try to answer questions about the Bible together. Our son is three years old, however, so getting big, long Bible stories to stick with all their details feels overwhelming. I am always thankful for good books from trustworthy publishers (especially those who make sure not to put images of Jesus in their books) that provide snapshots of Bible stories and help us get the main point clearly in front of our little boy with some sort of illustration to make it more memorable.
Editor Hannah Estes and illustrator Jessica Hait have partnered with P&R Publishing to produce a series of board books called Tiny Hands. The two that we have in our home are Tiny Hands Apostles’ Creed and Tiny Hands Psalms. I am very thankful for these two useful resources and think they are a great help to bring core nuggets of biblical truth in front of young members of our covenant community.
Tiny Hands Apostles’ Creed presents a line or two from the Creed on one page with well-done and creative illustrations on the opposing page. Since our church recites the Apostles’ Creed together monthly, I have thought often about how I might help my son memorize it. Although memorizing the whole thing is still a long way off for us, I was thankful as I sat down to read this little book with my son that I was exposing him personally and directly to the content of this essential statement of faith. I look forward to reading this book with him again and again in hopes that small but frequent exposure to the Creed will help it seep into his young mind and make it more and more memorable. This little book presents that content in a way that keeps him interested, so we can read over it together.
Tiny Hands Psalms does much the same with portions from the Psalms. The format is the same, presenting material from the Psalms next to quality illustrations on each page. The versions of these selected psalms are paraphrases, digesting key aspects of the eight psalms included in this book (Ps 1, 18, 23, 34, 51, 100, 121, 139). Although this book is not everything you need, it is a helpful way to expose your child to some of our most important truths. I hope this book will help us teach our son what the Psalms are and how we can reflect on them together.
