The Christian community in India is under relentless attack from Hindu nationalist groups, particularly in certain states. Reports indicate a sharp rise in violence, with 640 incidents of discrimination and attacks recorded in 2024 alone, a fourfold increase from a decade ago. Churches are being vandalized, worship services disrupted, and pastors falsely accused of forced conversions under stringent anti-conversion laws. In Uttar Pradesh, over 60 Christians, including pastors, remain in jail for simply practicing their faith.
Recent incidents include:
- In Andhra Pradesh, three churches were attacked by Hindu nationalist mobs during Sunday services recently, leaving communities shaken
- In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, two Catholic priests were assaulted by a Hindu mob at a police station while supporting Christians accused of conversion activities.
- In Uttar Pradesh, several pastors were convicted under anti-conversion laws in early 2025, and are now facing five years in prison .
Social media posts highlight the growing fear, with reports of Christians being beaten, humiliated, and coerced into renouncing their faith. The Evangelical Fellowship of India notes that attacks nearly double on Sundays, targeting worshippers during services.
