The Rich Young Ruler: Law, Gospel, And Salvation

Join Chris Gordon and Dan Borvan as they dive into the story of the Rich Young Ruler from Mark 10:17-27. This discussion explores the interplay of law and gospel, the three uses of the law in Reformed theology, and the surprising challenge Jesus poses to a seemingly righteous man. From cultural context to theological depth, the speakers unpack what this encounter reveals about self-righteousness, grace, and the free offer of the gospel.

  1. Wonderful reflections! Mark’s account makes clear the man had money. Matt. 19 adds that he was young. Luke 18 adds “ruler.” One wonders if John had included this, we would also have heard “handsome.” Exactly the picture of a desirable seeker that most evangelism models today (and apparently even back in the ANE) would fight hard to recruit, and not to offend. You guys brilliantly pointed out that Jesus did just the opposite. Such a necessary and counter-cultural reminder. I think “Jesus loved him” in 10:21 means “loved him enough to tell him the truth about his own idolatries” as much as anything.
