Office Hours: Bob Godfrey On The Holy Spirit In The Ecumenical Creeds

Office HoursWith this episode we begin season 7 of Office Hours and our theme is “The Holy Spirit: Lord and Giver of Life.” That phrase, “Lord and Giver of Life” was included in the Nicene Creed at Constantinople in 381. It is a powerful phrase that captures a number of biblical truths, among them the truth at the Holy Spirit was sovereignly and powerfully active in creation just as he is sovereignly and powerfully active in our salvation. It is the Holy Spirit who brings us to life and applies to us all that Christ did for us. We begin by considering what we confess with and in the ancient, ecumenical (catholic or universal) creeds to challenge some of the ways that the evangelical world has adopted to talk about the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Bob Godfrey joins us for this episode to help us understand why the churches used this language and what it means. Bob is president and professor of church history at Westminster Seminary California and the author of several books, including John Calvin: Pilgrim and Pastor.
