Heidelcast: Does God Give Faith to the Living or the Dead?

Dan writes to the HC to ask about the timing of regeneration (making alive by the Spirit) and faith but he raises the question of whether God gives faith to the living or the dead? Are we regenerate because we believe or do we believe because we’re regenerate? This is a significant question, so important that the Synod of Dort addressed it twice in the Canons of Dort (1619). It touches on the biblical doctrine of sin and the biblical doctrines of grace divine sovereignty.
