Harrison and Sarah,
When I was doing doctoral studies at Union/VA in the early ‘80s, we learned that something similar happened to John Haddon Leith. When preaching one summer Sunday in a rural church, Dr. Leith noticed a snake curled up inside the pulpit on the shelf, and was concerned that, if it got loose, decorum might suffer. It was a small pulpit area, with windows on each side, so during the singing of a hymn, Leith threw the snake out the open window, and many people present didn’t even notice!
