The Devil’s Mousetrap

“For our price he tendered his cross as a mousetrap; there he placed his blood as bait.”
Augustine of Hippo

Do you wonder if a mouse knows better,
But can’t say “no” to a well-aged cheddar?
Does he see the hammer? The sticky glue?
And say, “Dash it, I want the Stilton blue!”
Did Lucifer see the heel poised to crush,
And pierce the skin for one last god-like rush,
Unable to resist the chance to bite,
Welcoming doom for a moment’s delight?

The Son of God was too tempting a treat.
The blood of the Lamb, too tempting a drink.
The tempter was tempted and took the bait.
He swallowed a meal that he could not eat—
Stale bread, sour wine—his heart began to sink.
The trap was sprung; love triumphed over hate.
