“Behold, children are a heritage from Yahweh, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Ps 127:3). God’s Word regards children as a great blessing. To Abraham and to all believers he gives this promise: “And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you” (Gen 17:7). To the Old Testament church he said, “I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.” Peter said, “For the promise is to you and to your children” (Acts 2:39). Under the types and shadows he gave circumcision as a pointer to the death of Christ (Col 2:11–12) and in the New Covenant he gave baptism (Col 2:11–12; Matt 28:19; Rom 6:4).
