Another Servant of the Word

Trey Jasso Ordination Service

Ordination of Trey Jasso

Originally posted 3 Feb 2013 15:53 UPDATE: New photos added

Just a quick notice to say that I’m looking forward to participating in ordination service for Trey Jasso at 6:00 PM this evening at New Life PCA in La Mesa. Trey is a graduate of WSC and military veteran about to enter into another sort of service. Ordination services are a bit like weddings. It’s hard for the ordinand to focus on everything but I hope that the service is edifying and serves Trey as well as my ordination service has served me over the years.

Pray for Trey as he begins his ministry of Word and sacrament.

    • “Ah, the church that used to be in the OPC…”

Vermonster notes a small stage band in the upper left. I guess it’s betraying its OPC roots by its not being FRONT AND CENTER. And maybe its PCA affiliation by having a stage band.

Yes, NLPCA very consciously keeps musicians off to the side, not front and center. There is also a choir shell out of view, behind the left (“stage”-right) of the congregation, facing forwards. The idea is that musicians are participating in worship together with the congregation.

You should note also that there are no people in that alcove in the picture, just music stands. FWIW, that setup is primarily for “pre-service singing”. One Sunday evening a month is dedicated to band-led songs from the para-hymnal, and apart from that the alcove is generally empty between the call to worship and benediction.

Yes, and I recently learned that the other New Life PCA in San Diego (Escondido rather) also used to be OPC. I’ve never been there myself, but I think if you want a stage band, pretty good bet you’ll find one there. (As well as a handful of WSCAL professors as members).

Also FWIW, that band was present, and even more active, back in the OPC days. Brian Tallman has been leading the church in a more liturgical, higher-church direction for years now.
