Historical Context and Background
The Reformed tradition has deep historical roots, but in the rapidly growing West Valley of Phoenix, Arizona, confessional Reformed churches have been relatively scarce. This reality created an opportunity for God’s people to establish another faithful witness to the gospel in this quickly expanding community.
The Journey to Establishment
What began many years ago as a prayer request gradually developed into something more:
- Initial Fellowship: Members of Phoenix URC who lived in the West Valley began meeting regularly to pray for God’s blessing on a potential church plant.
- Growing Together in the Word: These gatherings strengthened the community’s bonds and reinforced their shared vision for a church rooted in Scripture and the Reformed confessions. The core group demonstrated spiritual maturity and a zeal to share their blessings with others in the community.
- Formal Gatherings Begin: The Lord was faithful, not only providing a minister but also moving the hearts of approximately fifty members of Phoenix URC to participate in this new work. In June 2025, we depart with the blessing and oversight of Phoenix URC to establish Inheritance United Reformed Church, a new congregation in Goodyear, AZ, committed to faithfully proclaiming God’s Word in this growing community.
Our Theological Foundation
At Inheritance URC, we are grounded in Scripture and our confessions. Our understanding of God’s Word leads us to emphasize:
- The authority of Scripture as the inspired, infallible, and sufficient Word of God
- Salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone
- Covenant theology that recognizes God’s faithfulness across generations
- The ordinary means of grace as God’s appointed way to nourish his people
We stand firmly in the Reformed tradition, subscribing to the Three Forms of Unity (the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort) as faithful summaries of biblical teaching.
Our Mission and Vision
The mission of Inheritance URC centers around proclaiming the gospel with clarity and conviction. In contrast to much of the American church’s emphasis on entertainment and pragmatism, we are committed to worship that is reverent, God-centered, and Word-driven. We follow the regulative principle of worship and draw from the rich heritage of the Reformed tradition.
Looking to the Future
As we look ahead to our first year and beyond, our focus will be on:
- Establishing consistent morning and evening worship services
- Developing deeper relationships within our congregation and community
- Training new leaders to serve as elders and deacons
- Finding and potentially developing a permanent meeting location
- Creating discipleship pathways for people at all stages of spiritual growth
Prayer Requests
We covet the prayers of our brothers and sisters in Christ for:
- Christ’s exaltation in all our ministry efforts
- Unity in our congregation as we work through the challenges of being a new church plant
- Effective outreach to our neighbors in the West Valley
- Growth in membership as God draws people to himself through our witness
- Training of officers who will shepherd God’s flock with wisdom and grace
