We cannot take direct hold of Christ himself in a physical sense because he is bodily in heaven. We are not directly surrounded by his physical kingdom in the new creation yet, even though he reigns in heaven. So, his promises must be given to his people by some means. He has appointed word, sacraments, and prayer as those means. Certainly, we receive Christ by faith as the internal administration. Still, the outward means of the external administration communicate those promises so that we can believe in Christ and thereby receive him.”
